Watch Documentary Film of Indonesia’s Silent Emergency: Stunting in Rural Populations
Nayla Punjabi, daughter of Manoj Punjabi (CEO of MD Entertainment), produced a documentary film that raised the theme of stunting. What is stunting? Stunting is a growth disorder in which a person has a short stature, which is mostly caused by nutritional problems since the baby is in the womb until after the child is born. Because of this, Nayla Punjabi intends to realize efforts to prevent stunting through a documentary film entitled “Indonesia’s Silent Emergency.”
Caring and Providing Stunting Prevention efforts, Nayla Punjabi, Documentary Film Production to Spread Awareness of the Dangers of Stunting
Under the auspices of the MD Foundation, Nayla Punjabi collaborated with 1000 Days Fund to create a short documentary film titled “Indonesia’s Silent Emergency: Stunting in Rural Populations.” This film aims to raise public awareness about stunting and inspire preventive actions to prevent stunting that affects the future of millions of children in Indonesia.
Based on the documentary, it is stated that there are five causes of stunting, including:
- Poor maternal nutrition and health
- Poor infant feeding
- Inadequate breastfeeding
- Infections
- Lack of access to health services
It is noted that in 2022 alone, stunting has hit more than 20% of the population in Indonesia. Therefore, “Indonesia’s Silent Emergency” shows the struggles of rural families prone to stunting and the long-term impacts on children’s growth. In addition, through this documentary produced by Nayla Punjabi, it is emphasized that the first 1,000 days of a child’s growth are important—if disturbed, it can cause irreversible damage.

The 1000 Days Fund is a non-profit with a focused approach to inventing and testing innovative, cost-effective solutions to end stunting—a condition that affects 1 in 3 Indonesian children. We train and equip community health workers with the tools and confidence needed to prevent stunting. The multiplier is that we leave behind functioning village-level health systems with the potential to scale. In five years, we have trained 72,669 community health workers, facilitated over 361,017 malnutrition screenings at home, and massively distributed more than 3.5 million smart posters in partnership with BKKBN. In 1000 Days Fund districts, we have reduced stunting rates by 43.5%, saving over 70,000 children from the risk of stunting.
